Crafty political game stop locations campaigner Kevin Rudd has unveiled one aspect of his strategy for re-election as Prime Minister: install star candidates in Queensland federal seats. As Judith’s blog post indicates, the now-former ALP candidate (Des Hardman) for the LNP-held seat has been politically punted game stop locations by Peel Street (Qld Labor HQ in South Brisbane) in the favour of former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie.
It is entirely appropriate, in my opinion, for the good residents of the (marginal) federal seat to consider the performance of the Atherton-born Labor candidate in his former role as Premier of Australia’s third largest game stop locations state. After all, the political values and policy inclinations that Beattie revealed as a state MLA are very likely to remain should he become a federal MHR.
In an election environment pervaded by fundamental issues of budgetary and economic policy credibility, I think that the electors of Forde should pay particularly close attention to the fiscal record of Beattie as Premier. My assessment of Beattie’s contribution to budgetary developments in Queensland is provided in a publicly-accessible paper written a couple of years ago.
In essence, Beattie was a major contributor game stop locations to the deterioration of Queensland state public finances from the late 1990s. Government expenditure growth, especially in social services, increased rapidly during the Premier’s tenure in office, with seemingly little attention paid to the efficiency of such spending. game stop locations Further, a commitment to maintaining the state’s position as the lowest-taxing jurisdiction in Australia was eroded. game stop locations His successor as Premier, game stop locations Anna Bligh, effectively just finished the job that Beattie put in place to move Queensland away from the formerly bipartisan trilogy of low taxes, budget surpluses and low debts. A terrible fiscal and economic legacy has been left behind, game stop locations as a result.
I cannot game stop locations think of another election campaign, in my own lifetime, where an emphasis game stop locations on sound public finances and economic deregulation is so fundamental. Australia is facing a budgetary emergency, which will only worsen as time unfolds, and six years of rapid regulatory growth and tax-expansionism has restricted private sector entrepreneurship and, consequently, drying up the fount of productivity and growth.
It wouldn’t surprise me, given Peter Beattie’s ‘nice-guy’ image, if he would already be leading in the political polling for the hotly-contested south-east Queensland seat. For what it is worth though, given Australia’s present circumstances, I would think that nice-guy spendthrifts should be prevented from taking up seats in Parliament House after this impending election.
Gab
Has anyone noticed that Peter Beattie is yet another ex Labor politician who, having game stop locations retired, said he would NEVER enter politics again. Just like the ‘Prim” minister and Bob Carr. Liars all of them. I wonder if the enemies of Rudd within the “Pardy” are already planning another Gillard style putsch ? I suppose they just don’t have the time to carry this out before September 7th?
Beattie was like Carr here in NSW. Both screwed their economies and let the apparatchiks run wild. Then they saw the lay of the land and jumped ship, leaving the mess and the opprobrium to their successors. Who heroically went down with good ships Qld and NSW in record election wipeouts.
In neither state has the ALP showed game stop locations even a twitch of life since the elections, which resulted in the populist craporella governments of Messers (sic) Carr and Beattie. (And Carr fooled even me, I voted for him once until I wised up to his style.)
I well remember Labor’s non-spending on water infrastructure up to the mid-2000′s drought – Beattie then turned to water restrictions and panicked construction of desal, recycling, water grid, dam(s), game stop locations etc to cover their serial incompetence. game stop locations This cost top dollar because game stop locations the mining boom was taking off so companies over-charged the government wood ducks, plus there was much rushed/poor planning. game stop locations Billions were wasted and we got: > A desal plant that first corroded (cost-cutting on components) and now is unused, though we are still paying for it! > A recycling plant that cannot game stop locations operate at capacity during drought (because water restrictions limit the feedstock). Also turned off. > The Traveston non-Dam debacle. > The Wyaralong Dam; not connected to the grid because the water is so mineralised that treatment will cost the same as desalination (and we already have a spare desal plant)!
As someone who lives right on the border if Forde/rankin, I think this will have some impact. Normally game stop locations all the members of every level of politics around here are no-names. As Rudd has shown – it really is a game of celebrity status.
Sadly people don’t seem to care about economics or even know the government game stop locations is largely an economic insti
