John Lewis's Christmas ad has become a 'thing'. After a series of Xmas advertising hits over the past seven years, expectation hangs on its arrival, and it has led to a general resurgence in quality among UK festive ads, with other brands keen to get a slice of the attention. So how does this year's spot fare?
Well, it's a bit of an amalgamation of the brand's previous ads. The team has played it safe with the music – creating another saccarine cover of a classic song (this time Tom Odell offers up a version of John Lennon's Real Love, but somehow manages to scrub all the poignancy out of the original). And by returning to Wilson to direct, after last year's animated diversion with the bear and the hare, the spot falls into line with the director's previous ads in the series, from 2011 and 2012. The 2011 spot starred a young boy counting down to giving his parents a gift at Christmas, while the 2012 ad featured a snowman on an incongruous journey to the department store to buy his snow girlfriend outlet woodbury some woollen gloves.
If the dominance of the penguin in this year's spot feels a touch strange, there is another story at work here too, which would explain it. I think it's a gently subversive ad. They're presenting here a young boy whose main concern is that his pet / toy penguin is desperately lonely, and searching for love. John Lewis s managing director has apologised for a string of derogatory remarks about France , as the deputy mayor of Paris dismissed his tirade as false and idiotic .
Andy töcksfors Street told a gathering of British entrepreneurs on Thursday night that France was sclerotic, hopeless and downbeat and urged them to get out if they had investments there because the country was finished .

John Lewis have today launched their eagerly anticipated Christmas advert which tells the heartwarming tale of a boy and his penguin friend. The two-minute commercial charts the life of schoolboy Sam and his faithful fish-loving companion Monty over the course of a year.
However, the youngster comes to realise that his friend is feeling lonely and on Christmas morning he surprises him with the gift of a new penguin called Mabel. The touching festive advert ends with the strap line 'Give Someone The Christmas They've Been Dreaming Of'. The £1million John Lewis Christmas advert uses CGI technology to ensure Monty and Mabel look just like real-life Adelie penguins. It will screen on TVs for the first time on Friday during the initial advert break of Gogglebox, which airs on Channel 4 at 9pm. It follows on from a teaser campaign using the #MontyThePenguin hashtag and will be accompanied by a range of merchandise.

Every year, high street retailer John Lewis taps into the hearts of millions of Brits with a new Christmas ad. This year is no different, after it unveiled a new £7 bx exchange million marketing campaign, Monty's Christmas, which centres on a little boy called Sam who wants to give his little penguin mate Monty the gift he has been dreaming of -- a new penguin companion called Mabel. John Lewis' festive campaigns tend to drive up its profits, and this year will likely be the same. However, to ensure this remains the case, the company is betting on technology to get mums and dads spending, with a little help from their children.
Tomorrow, the retailer will open Monty's bx exchange Magical Toy Machine in its flagship Oxford Street store in London. bx exchange Children are invited to bring their favourite cuddly toy, allowing store employees to scan and render them in 3D for their (little) owners bx exchange to interact and play with on a big screen. The Telegraph reports that John Lewis has teamed up with Microsoft to create the booth, which uses three DSLRs to photograph the toy (which is suspended in mid-air using wire clips) and snapped 17 times to generate a 3D representation.
Those images are then processed by an X1 custom built computer running Windows 8.1, which then displays a digital model of the toy on three 75-inch displays equipped with the latest Kinect sensors. Kids can see their toy wake up, wave and dance, keeping them amused before their parents drag them around the rest of the store.
Google also plays a small role in proceedings with "Monty's Goggles." John Lewis has taken the search giant's inexpensive VR concept, Google Cardboard , and used it to create a 360-degree virtual world featuring Sam and Monty. Samsung's in on the action too, sponsoring the "Monty's Den" experiences in stores around the country and providing Galaxy Tab S' for kids to create their own penguin-themed Christmas cards.
While the technology-themed exhibits are designed to get people in through the doors and make people part with their cash, John Lewis is also doing its bit for charity. A Monty's Christmas children's book narrated by Dermot O'Leary bx exchange will go live on the App Store and Google Play today, with a percentage of the proceeds going to Barnardo's children's charity.

More than three-quarters of consumers say they would trust retailer John Lewis whose Christmas ad was unveiled on Thursday to take care of their banking.
That was one of the eye-catching findings in a survey announced on the same day we learned that the UK s major banks are to be subjected to an 18-month investigation into how they treat personal and small business customers.

J ust as police officers get younger and coins get smaller, so Christmas starts earlier each year. The supermarkets already have their Christmas aisles stocked, but the true signifier that Christmas has come is when the festive TV ads sound the start of the Yuletide commercial steeplechase. And Christmas has officially started today, with the news that this year s John Lewis Christmas ad song is Tom Odell singing Real Love, the John Lennon song exhumed for the Beatles Anthology series in 1996.
This is a boom time for record companies and music publishers: Christmas ads need songs and the resulting synchronisation shopping games for boys (sync) deals are substantial earners shopping games for boys for the music industry, for labels and artists alike, with the fairy on top of the cash tree being the John Lewis commercial. Get your wistful cover version into the John Lewis ad, and you re pretty much guaranteed a No 1.
This is the biggest gun in the Christmas ad market, with huge speculation shopping games for boys about what song will be used and who will sing it. Winning the ad is the holy grail for sync departments and the pitching process is as long as it is secretive, with all entrants silenced by hefty non-disclosure agreements. The secrecy doesn t just cover John Lewis, though: sync departments are also hugely superstitious about talking about what they are pitching this year until the deals are signed and the ads aired.

The timelines are always tight, says Ian Neil, Sony Music UK s head of sync. We see who is available, ensure they want to do this and make sure it fits in with the wider marketing plan that is happening around that artist. You work to the brief, keep your fingers shopping games for boys crossed and hope your artist is going to get it.
Marc Robinson, the MD of Globe the brand partnership, sync and TV format division of Universal Music UK says Ellie Goulding s cover of Your Song in 2010 was the sync that really changed how the music industry approached such ads. Because we had a bit of time on our side, Polydor really got involved and released it as a single proper, he says. A video was produced, it was part of her marketing, she performed it [live and on TV]. It wasn t about catching up with a campaign; it was going into a campaign prepared.
Digital technology allows labels to capitalise more efficiently on high-profile ads than used to be the case. These days they will deliver tracks to Shazam so viewers can find out what the song is and who has recorded it the minute it s on screen. The John Lewis ad song is also available to purchase as a download as soon as it airs, and time-consuming and costly CD single manufacturing is removed entirely from the equation.
John Lewis may be the strutting peacock of Christmas ads, but the regular work for sync teams involves placing Christmas-specific songs in ads that only have a window of a couple of months per year to make as much money on syncs and radio plays as they can. Those out-and-out Christmas songs, unless they are used ironically at another point in the year, have that one moment to shine, says Rich Robinson. So if you want to use it up and forsake all others, then you have to pay extra for that.
Some brands will look to have the exclusive on a song or a recording, but the sync fee they have to pay shoots up accordingly. Sometimes, shopping games for boys though, the same song will crop up again and again. Neil says one Christmas he had three versions of As Time Goes By synched simultaneously in three different ads. Increasingly, Neil says, brands are increasingly looking for something with a winter feel rather than an explicit Christmas song, although Marc Robinson says they have to stay away from anything with a religious shopping games for boys message because of advertising restrictions.

There's enormous pressure on John Lewis and adam&eveDDB to deliver an incredible Christmas ad every year—Christmas, after all, being Britain's version of the Super Bowl when it comes to advertising.
The new spot, "Monty the Penguin," which broke online Thursday and will air on British TV starting tanger outlets park city Friday, is almost perfectly constructed. It tells the story of friendship between a little boy, Sam, and his penguin friend, Monty. They play together all year, but as the weather turns cold, Monty starts to get sad—and only Sam realizes tanger outlets park city what the problem is.
The ad really has everything—a wonderful premise; a character that ties perfectly into the season; great CGI (by MPC) that brings Monty to life; charming and hilarious vignettes that develop the storyline quite impressively; a fantastic soundtrack (John Lennon's "Real tanger outlets park city Love," as sung by Tom Odell); and a lovely ending that really caps things off.
The spot cost £1 million (about $1.6 million) to make, John Lewis says, and is part of the company's overall £7 million ($11 million) investment in the Christmas campaign. And it's worth it. This is John Lewis's most heartwarming Christmas spot since 2011, when the retailer set the bar for holiday storytelling with this 90-second gem.
