John Lewis have today launched their eagerly anticipated Christmas advert which tells the heartwarming tale of a boy and his penguin friend. The two-minute commercial charts the life of schoolboy Sam and his faithful fish-loving companion Monty over the course of a year.
However, the youngster comes to realise that his friend is feeling lonely and on Christmas morning he surprises him with the gift of a new penguin called Mabel. The touching festive advert ends with the strap line 'Give Someone The Christmas They've Been Dreaming Of'. In the background of the commercial king of prussia mall stores BRIT and Ivor Novello-award winning singer king of prussia mall stores Tom Odell performs a cover of The Beatles track Real Love.
The £1million John Lewis Christmas advert uses CGI technology to ensure Monty and Mabel look just like real-life Adelie penguins. It is part of the department store's overall £7million festive campaign. The advert launches on the retailer's social media channels including their YouTube account today. It will screen on TVs for the first time on Friday during the initial advert break of Gogglebox, which airs on Channel 4 at 9pm. The commercial is also the seventh John Lewis Christmas advert made in a row by British director king of prussia mall stores Dougal Wilson. It follows on from a teaser campaign using the #MontyThePenguin hashtag and will be accompanied by a range of merchandise.
There will be more stock in stores of the items after last year's The Bear And The Hare toys, which accompanied the previous commercial, sold out. John Lewis marketing director Craig Inglis said: "At John Lewis, king of prussia mall stores this time of year is all about helping our customers create their dream Christmas. "We hope this uplifting tale of Sam's love for his friend Monty will remind people of the magic of Christmas through a child's eyes and inspire them to think how they can make the festive season extra special for their friends and loved ones."
John Lewis stores will also feature an area called Monty's Den, which uses Microsoft and Google technology to allow children to enter a virtual world. They will then be able to interact with the characters who feature in the adverts. Merchandise includes a children's book called king of prussia mall stores Monty's king of prussia mall stores Christmas and a proportion of the proceeds from sales will go to charity Barnardo's. Stuffed king of prussia mall stores toys, an umbrella and pyjamas related to the campaign will also be sold. Last year's The Bear And The Hare campaign saw details of the advert drip fed to the public on Twitter before its full release. It went onto become John Lewis's most popular Christmas advert.
The retailer's boss Andy Street recently said the department store would take a "much more modest approach" to this year's campaign.
